There is a ton of cider in the freezer now! In fact so much that it’s hard finding room for the 6 deer, now Summer Sausage!  I am guessing when it was all done there were around 40 gallons.  These photos were taken in October sometime.  There’s a lot more going on our farm then just the hogs!

The weather has turned very cold here in SW Minnesota.  Our home is warm though, with all the baking my girls are doing!  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Life is good, down on the farm!

About Callens Honey Farm

We live on a small family farm located in S.W. Minnesota, near the South Dakota border. The source of our honey is from white and red clover. The honey appears as liquid gold in color. Our honey is extracted using a hand cranked centrifugal force extractor. Then the honey is screened once into a holding container from which we later fill the small honey bottles. We do not heat treat the honey nor add any other ingredients. Pure and natural is our Minnesota honey! What could taste better?

What a torrent of apples! Never saw anything like it! Brrr, it must have been cold! Can you use that many gallons in a year? Do you give some away? Hey, pipe some this way. 😊. You must have had a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner. We were at Chris and Sandi’s. Pretty special, toasts with Champaign etc. You must miss Peter and Frenchy not being so nearby now.😒

    Lots of love. rr💕

    • Hi there Ruth. Thanks for the nice note. Yes we share the cider and consume plenty too. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving down at Frenchy and Peters. I then stayed down for a couple nights which is always fun. They aren’t so far away and we see them pretty often! Glad to hear you had a fun time with the family. Take good care, Love to all, Sandra

Yummy! Does Fred have any secret recipes for amazing hard cider? I’ve got 10 gallons that are a little ‘meh’ and not clarifying..

    • Hi Andrew! Good to hear from you. I asked Fred about the hard cider. He said crab apples are the best for this. 10 gallons of cider could use the size of an aspirin of SO 2 powder per gallon. Champagne Yeast and 70% temp. Depending on the apples you may need some sugar too. Good luck to you and all the best to your entire family!

Hmm… we do have some crab apples. I did use some sugar, and a nottingham ale yeast that was on hand. Maybe time will make it better. Thanks!

Apple cider! Just in time for the winter months… ☺️

  4. My beautiful co-grandma! Isn’t life good, though? Wish I could drop by for some of that cider — we condensed ours 4:1 and canned it, and it’s delicious mulled. My hard cider is still somewhat boring, but I got some vinegar going. Merry Christmas to the family! xxxooo
